Celebrated for her style and substance, Michelle Obama has transformed the role of first lady and become a 21st century icon, attracting attention from all over the world. The qualities so admired in her – intelligence, strength and charisma – radiate through her personal style, which has united accessibility with high-wattage glamour. The clothes, like the woman, feel both familiar and inspirational. Readily mixing high-end labels with more affordable brands, with a focus on craftsmanship and artistry, Mrs. O has elevated the notion of real value and ushered in a new era of “fashion democracy”.
Building on the success of Mrs-O.org – the Web site that chronicles Michelle Obama’s style – MRS. O: THE FACE OF FASHION DEMOCRACYtakes a closer look at America’s modern style icon, featuring more than 120 photographs of the first lady and delving into the back story of her clothes and accessories. It also goes behind the scenes with interviews from her favorite designers, including Isabel Toledo, Jason Wu, Michael Kors, Maria Pinto and Isaac Mizrahi.
Opening with a brief overview of Michelle Obama’s early years, the book goes on to provide rarely seen photos from behind-the-scenes on the presidential primary trail through the 2008 Democratic National Convention, the monumental events of election night, the inauguration and early chapters of life in the White House. The final chapter hears the opinions of Mrs. O’s adoring fans – giving the last word to the people.
Original photographs of Michelle Obama’s most iconic looks, along with commentary from fashion experts, top off this tactile visual feast. Woven together with sketches and illustration inspired by the first lady, the book reveals the story of a new era of American fashion.

Mrs. O: The Face of Fashion Democracy
The Marxists attempt to make the Obama’s icons for America is getting sickening. Don’t spend your quickly dwindling funds on this tripe.

Two days ago I submitted my review of this book and assigned it one-star. My review was duly posted by Amazon.
Today I noticed my review has been deleted by Amazon. Isn’t it ironic that this book is entitled “The Face of Fashion Democracy” when Amazon is restricting the freedom of speech via this review feature and deleting reviews that are critical?
Now the book is authored and funded by a global marketing firm called BBH (Bartle Bogle Hegarty) and published by global publisher Hachette Books. Do one of these large global companies have such sway over Amazon that they can get Amazon to take down critical but otherwise totally legitimate reviews of the book? This is very disturbing to say the least.
To recap my review and the reason I assign this book one-star (less if I could): the content of this book is the equivalent of what you would expect to find in glossy women’s magazines: just fluff and the regurgitation of comments and images that we have already seen and can access elsewhere at no cost. The book has been pulled together not by an author who is passionate about her subject but by a global marketing firm seeking to trade on the Obama name.
Persons contemplating buying this book need to know that the writers of this book – BBH – earlier this year introduced and sold “MrsO” t-shirts, this book is just the latest in their product line of made-in-China products. More products are apparently planned including handbags and jewelry. All of these made-in-China products are targetted at the naive who will buy anything “Obama”, many of whom probably should be spending their hard-earned dollars (or government handouts) on the necessities of life.
And if you don’t believe me do your own research. Get the facts about BBH, author Mary Tomer (a BBH marketing executive) and indeed just look inside the cover the book available here on Amazon and you will see it was printed in China. How do you think President Obama will feel about that – they are trading on Michelle Obama’s name and image but don’t even publish and manufacture the products in the US?
A brilliant marketing strategy by BBH – absolutely! A book worthy of your hard-earned dollars – no way!
Buy American and don’t be fooled that a book with the image of the First Lady on the cover is endorsed by the Obama’s or indeed even “made in America”.
Two thumbs down.

I enjoy this book and keep it handy for reference as well as pure enjoyment of watching Mrs. O transform herself in dress as well as her person. She is an inspiration. Watching her combine inexpensive clothes with designer clothes reminds me of Princess Diana who did the same thing making us all think we can own that look too. And we can!

I was thrilled when this book arrived, and now I can’t put it down! The articles and interviews are eloquently written and thought provoking, while the images seem to jump out at you on the page. What is especially special about this book is the personal feel to it and an overwhelming desire to learn even more about Mrs. O. I’ve ordered many more for the holidays and am excited to have such a special gift to give!

I follow [...] the web site that Mary Tomer created to chronicle Michelle Obama’s fashion style. When I saw that this idea was turned into a book called Mrs. O: The Face of Fashion Democray, I knew I had to have a copy myself. I find that Mrs. Obama is a First Lady with intelligence, style, class, strength and charisma. These qualities are reflected in her personal style and choice of clothing that is inspiring. I like that she combines high end designer labels with more affordable brands such as Gap, J Crew, and Liz Claiborne.
Mrs. O: The Face of Fashion Democracy includes over 120 beautiful photographs of Michelle Obama and describes the back story related to her clothes and accessories. The photographs are stunning and bold and I enjoyed looking through them and reading about details related to the fashions she chose to wear. You get a true sense of her personal style. There are also interviews with her favorite designers which include Isabel Toledo, Jason Wu, Michael Kors, Maria Pinto and Isaac Mizrahi. The book opens with Michelle Obama’s earlier years and even includes rare photos from behind-the-scenes of the presidential primary trail , the 2008 Democratic National Convention, the events of election night, the inauguration and early life in the White House. There are even drawings and opinions at the end of the book from Mrs. O’s fans which was fun to read.
